Field note 04 · High road
Altitude belongs in the route logic
Kunming, Dali and Lijiang create a gradual approach before the final climb to Shangri-La. The map should make that visible.

Every mapped stop appears together so the gradual northwest climb is easy to read. Check current weather, access and personal health guidance before travel.

01 · Route logic
Read the map as a schedule for the body
Kunming offers a gentle opening before the route moves toward the northwest. Dali raises the landscape without demanding a difficult first day, and Lijiang adds another step before the final road reaches the Tibetan plateau.
This progression cannot guarantee how anyone will feel, but it avoids treating a rapid rise as invisible travel time. Sleep, hydration, weather and individual health still matter, and the route needs room to respond.
02 · First rise
Let Dali be a buffer, not a transfer stop
Two nights beside Erhai create a useful middle altitude and a softer pace. Xizhou, lakeside cycling and Bai village life can fill the day without an aggressive climb or a long sequence of ticketed attractions.
That slower structure is important. The body adjusts while the traveler is still experiencing a complete destination, rather than waiting in a hotel for the itinerary to resume.
03 · Second rise
Use Lijiang to test the mountain rhythm
Lijiang brings colder mornings, higher terrain and the option of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The mountain day should remain weather-dependent, with Baisha or a lower valley ready to carry the story if wind or altitude changes the plan.
Returning early matters more than adding another evening sight. The following road climbs again, and a calm night above the old town is part of preparing for it.
04 · Final rise
Make the first plateau evening deliberately light
The road through Tiger Leaping Gorge makes the elevation change visible. By the time Songzanlin’s roofs appear, the journey has moved through a canyon and onto a high plateau rather than simply arriving at another city pin.
The first evening in Shangri-La should stay quiet: a warm meal, water and an early night. The map may end at the hotel, but the route logic ends with enough energy left to notice where the traveler has arrived.
